This year, there were some really great Oscar contenders up for Best Documentary Feature and Best Documentary Short categories. Here's a little blurb about each to help you decide which to watch first.
The Queen of Basketball, Best Documentary Short winner, is about the remarkable basketball player Lucy Harris. This film is part of "Almost Famous", a series about people who were on a trajectory to become famous, but because of a turn of events remained unknown. Sadly, Lucy recently passed away, and the idea that her story almost wasn't captured makes the film even more poignant.

Summer of Soul, Best Feature Documentary winner, was directed by Ahmir Thompson aka Questlove. This film documents a music festival in Harlem that took place in 1969, the same year as Woodstock. When researching the Summer of Soul, Questlove discovered untouched film that had been gathering dust in a basement for 50 years. This film is a tribute to the talented musicians who performed at this festival and explores the impact of black erasure on music, culture, and people.

Lead Me Home, Documentary Short nominee, humanizes homelessness by breaking down the stereotypes and stigma surrounding it. This film captures an intimate perspective about people who are homeless and how their circumstances lead them to end up in that scenario.

Flee, Documentary Feature nominee, is an animated film about one man's immigration story of fleeing Afghanistan and coming out to his Middle Eastern family. The animation medium may have started as a means to protect the subject's privacy but ends up making the film a more immersive experience by bringing the subject's voice to the forefront.
